    Im planning to put this motor on a Linder 445 Max, weight 500 lbs boat only (227kg) and with a battery weighing 145 lbs (66kg) and myself weighing roughly the same. Total weight with me, boat, battery and engine will end up at 875 lbs (around 400 kg). Length of the boat is 14,6 ft (445cm) and it planes very easy with my current petrol engine with 25Hp. Usually I dont have to go much above 4000 rpm to keep the boat on plane. Do you believe I can plane my boat with the EP-20 engine or do I have to go for the EP-30?

    How difficult/inadvisable to mount an EP-20 or 50 outboard to a cabin cruiser swim platform for a low-cost and low-noise marina kicker motor? Throw in an electric hydraulic pump and I bet you can use the existing rudder control for steering.

      Relative to the cost of the boat in the video, the electric motor, the batteries, and the installation are cheap. And, now that the boat has an electric motor that will outlast the boat, there is no longer any expense for gasoline, engine maintenance, or repairs. And, the more the owner uses the boat, the more benefit they get from having the electric motor. And, remember, boating tends to be expensive, no matter what kind of boat or motor that you have. Even a good quality dinghi that you row with oars can cost thousands of dollars. So, focus on increasing your disposable income. Eventually, you will be able to afford a boat with a powerful electric motor, like the EP-14 shown in this video.

Now, isn’t it nice that a company comes up with an alternative that is cleaner and cheaper than gas and much cleaner than two stroke oil burners in your pristine lake. Gas also comes with a whole lot of baggage. Battery companies are reducing Cobalt significantly and can source from reputable mines. Same as coffee. But I’m sure you will have more negative nonsense to contribute.

    I have a ‘69 Silverline Shark, a 14 foot runabout with a 33 hp Evinrude ski Twin on it. (Actual length is 13’6”.) I keep thinking about and looking at converting to electric power, but I still want to run in the mid 20’s with it. So I need probably 40 to 50 continuous hp outboard power. I keep hoping Elco will come up with something suitable, but their 50 hp outboard is still way to heavy, expensive and not suited for that application. This boat with the outboard conversion configuration does not yet have the speed, power nor endurance to truly get “on top” and plane the way it was designed to run originally. I am not sure if it just lacks the power, or if it’s just too RPM limited with the motor and not able to spin the propeller fast enough to generate the necessary speed to get the boat to fully lift out of the water and plane. It appears to be in the semi plaining mode, which is highly inefficient energy wise for this hull.

      The input wattage for this "20" is 8.4KW (175 amps x 48 volts) according to their web site. 1hp is equal to 0.746KW. So 8.4KW is equal to about 11hp of input juice, the net power is less (wire loss, pump, shaft and gears). 175 amps needs fat copper wiring or it will heat up reducing efficiency.

    • @americanrambler4972
      @americanrambler4972 11 місяців тому

      @@ctibpo991 when I looked at the specs for these motors, they do produce rated hp at peak performance, but their continuous hp ratting is considerably less. Your 11 hp statement seems about right for what I saw for this motor. 11 hp is not much to push this boat up and over the hp hump to get on plain.

It's a 75hp 240v ac electric motor and was hoping to pair it with a marine alternator and 10,000 watt ac to dc power inverter or dc to ac inverter/not sure because I'm new to this arena. Anyways, I was hoping to run my system with 3 marine batteries, 1 to start the motor an the other 2 to get split between the alternator, and the 2 batteries in series to go back to the original motor battery. Does any1 know if my set-up will work to recycle n recharge itself so I don't ever have to worry about energy ever again?

    Hey, Elco team. I am interested in your products, specifically this EP-14. Though I have some pause with your figures. Your EP-14 is rated at 14 HP, yet you claim an input power of 6.24 kW. 6.24kW is around 8 HP. Is this a mistake?

    • @richardowens9061
      @richardowens9061 2 місяці тому

      It's not a mistake. Electric motors are more efficient than gasoline powered motors. And, the rating is intended to provide a good comparison to a gasoline motor - since, ostensibly, the electric motor would be used to replace an existing gasoline motor. So, if you have, for example, a 15HP gasoline motor, the EP-14 would be the closest match, even though the 6.24KW input power represents 8.32HP. I hope this helps.

    • @monono954
      @monono954 2 місяці тому

      @@richardowens9061 i don't know that I'm following your train of thought here. The rating of a given motor is typically the output of the motor on a dynamometer. Its efficiency is irrelevant to the measurement. Even if you account for efficiency, the EP-14 requires an input of 8hp. If you figure the efficiency of a brushless motor is around the 90% mark, then its actual output is closer to 7.2hp which is half of the rated output of a 15hp ICE.

    • @richardowens9061
      @richardowens9061 2 місяці тому

      @@monono954 You are correct that the rating of a motor is typically the output of the motor on a dynomometer. What I am saying is that a dynomometer is going to read about the same on an EP-14 as it would for a 15hp ICE. And, the EP-14 can provide that level of performance while consuming only 8.32 HP of electricity at 750w per HP.

    • @monono954
      @monono954 2 місяці тому

      @@richardowens9061 all due respect, that makes no sense. What you're claiming is that the motor will put out ~2x what it takes in. The motor has a rated input power of 8hp. That means at max throttle, it will consume roughly 6kW. How exactly is the motor going to output more than it takes in? A 15hp motor makes 15hp at the crank. If the motor on the EP-14 is 90% efficient is will put out 7.2HP at the crank. That's literally half the rated HP unless you can explain how it will double the input power.

    • @richardowens9061
      @richardowens9061 2 місяці тому

      @@monono954 Look, I'm not going to debate you on this issue in a UA-cam comment section. Elco has an excellent discussion of this issue on their web site. Let me suggest you review it. They have about a hundred years of real world experience with electric motors as compared to gasoline motors. In short, the inefficiencies of gasoline motor systems, with their narrow power bands and frictional losses translates into an EP-14 electric motor providing a similar experience to a 15 HP gasoline powered motor. Overall, electric motors are generally considered to be about as effective in doing work as a gasoline motor of 2-2.5 times the rated horsepower.

I love the idea of installing an Elco EP100, but at $20,000 +, the cost of the motor is out of my budget. I'm thinking of using a Nissan Leaf car drivetrain along with the battery pack from the car.
